The Old Town Warsaw's Old Town was established in the XIII century. The Old Town has charming square. The Market Square was formed in the turn of the XVIII and XIX century. It has rectangle form. To XVIII century it was the most important place of city. Important history events, political speeches, manifests and public executions took place in this place. Except this situations it was also used for trade. From the XV century in the center of square stood town hall made of bricks, which was surrounded by shops. The Town hall was pulled down in 1817 year. At the north side of square stood pillory and cage. In 1855 there were installed waterworks in Warsaw. From this time in the middle of the square there is fountain with monument of siren. During Warsaw revolution area of tenement houses was leveled and from 1949 to 1953 it was reconstructed. Presently the Old Town is place for walking, events and concerts. Square is closed for vehicular traffic. Besides monument of siren the most important monuments of Old Town are: tenement house number 27 (famous Fukier’s winery) and number 31 (Wójtowski’s tenement house). On the end of the Old Town are: Kolumna Zygmunta, Zamek Królewski, Barbakan and Pomnik Małego Powstańca. |
